Dr. Jeff SutherlandJeff Sutherland

Doctor Jeff Sutherland invented Scrum at Easel Corporation in 1993 and worked with Scrum Co-Creator Ken Schwaber to formalize the Scrum development process at OOPSLA’95. In the same year, he provided Kent Beck all background information on the creation of Scrum to assist him in the creation of eXtreme Programming. XP engineering practices then evolved along with SCRUM and the two leading Agile development processes work well together. Scrum and XP are the most widely used Agile processes worldwide and their creators are authors of the Agile Manifesto.

Dr. Sutherland is CEO of Scrum, Inc. and Chairman of the Scrum Foundation. He is Senior Advisor to OpenView Venture Partners and Scrum coach, mentor, and trainer to the venture group and their portfolio companies. Dr. Sutherland maintains hands-on experience with development in many software companies, and participates in project planning and team execution. His last seven companies have been laboratories for improvement of Scrum implementations and each have made a unique contribution to the worldwide Scrum community of practitioners.

Dr. Sutherland has been VP of Engineering, CTO or CEO of 11 software companies, developing Scrum in 4 of them and introducing today’s standard Scrum methodology to 7 of them. As CTO of PatientKeeper and IDX, he used Scrum to capture industry leadership for mobile application platforms in healthcare, enabling physicians to enhance revenue, reduce cost, and improve patient care. Recently, he evolved automated Scrum tools for real-time management reporting, reducing Scrum project management reporting to less than 10 minutes a day and developer administrative overhead to less than 1 minute a day an order of magnitude more efficient than traditional approaches to project management. Scrum helped PatientKeeper quadruple revenue in 2007.
